Talking dolls have been around for a long time – since I was a kid in fact. Back in the day, people used to buy talking Barbie dolls and G.I. Joe’s. They would have a few simple things to say. If memory serves me correctly, the Barbies would say things like “let’s go shopping” and the G.I. Joe’s would say things like “Go Joe,” and “Cobras dead ahead!”. There would be a single button on each talking doll – usually on the back – they you could push to get it to speak. The sound quality was not very good at all, and you could not choose what phrase it said and when.

Of course, even before that, there were the talking dolls with the pull string. Everyone owned one of these talking doll toys at one time or another. I don’t really understand the mechanics of them, but it involved a spring inside somehow. You would pull a string and, as it was slowly pulled back into the doll’s body, the toy would say a simple phrase.

Today’s talking toys are much more complex than the ones of a decade ago. With advances in computer technology, talking dolls have a surprisingly broad vocabulary. My niece recently bought a talking baby doll that almost blew my mind. It could tell you that it was hungry and you could actually feed it real food! I am not sure what happened to that real food after you put it into the plastic dolls mouth – I did not stick around for long enough to find out – but the level of realism was pretty impressive. I would love to take apart one of those talking doll toys and see how it works.

Some of them incorporate not only the plastic dials that they’ve always had, but actual animated screens that can interact with toddlers. I can’t even imagine what the next generation of toys will be like. One thing is for sure: they will be pretty awesome!
